You can change a game without changing any available action simply by changing when people act, how much they may do, and whose choices matter between their own turns. Timing can create anticipation, urgency, conversation, prediction, or tedious waiting.
The terms in this section move from the large rhythm of stages and rounds down to individual actions and reactions. They then examine ways of choosing actions, sharing participation, placing workers, bidding, drafting, and taking social roles. Do not begin by choosing a fashionable mechanism. Begin with the rhythm you want people to experience.

Units of Game Time: Show How the Parts of Play Fit Together
Technical terms: Action, Step, Turn, Round, Phase, Stage, Age
These terms usually describe nested units of play, although games use them inconsistently.
An action is a choice or operation available to a player.
A step is a smaller prescribed part of a procedure.
A turn is one player's principal opportunity to act.
A round is a repeating cycle, often one turn for each player.
A phase is a named portion devoted to one kind of activity.
A stage or age is a larger division in which rules, materials, or stakes may change.
See it in Scrabble
Placing a word, scoring it, and drawing replacement tiles are steps within a turn. One complete trip around the table can be called a round, although Scrabble does not need to name every possible level.
What you can do with it
Use the fewest levels that make timing clear. Ordinary words are usually better than thematic replacements when players need to know exactly when an effect begins, ends, or refreshes.
Draw your game's time units as containers inside containers. Remove any label that does not resolve a real question.
Ask a player
Could you tell when your opportunity began, what it contained, and when recurring effects refreshed?

Turn Order: Decide Who Acts Next—and Whether That Order Is a Choice
Technical terms: Fixed turn order, Stat turn order, Bid turn order, Progressive turn order, Claim turn order, Pass order, Role order, Random turn order
Turn order can be a quiet procedure or one of the game's important decisions.
Fixed order repeats the same sequence.
Stat order follows a value such as speed or initiative.
Bid order makes players pay for preferred positions.
Progressive order rotates the starting player over successive rounds.
Claim order lets an action reserve a future position.
Pass order rewards someone for stopping earlier now with earlier action later.
Role order attaches timing to the role or action selected.
Random order makes the next actor uncertain.

Scrabble's fixed clockwise order is effortless to follow. Viticulture lets players choose wake-up positions with different benefits. In 7 Wonders-style systems, role or card choices may determine resolution. A bag draw can make activation unpredictable without making the action itself random.
What you can do with it
Make order strategic only when acting sooner or later changes a meaningful possibility. Otherwise, choose the clearest fair procedure and keep it out of the way.
For each position in your sequence, name one advantage or disadvantage. If none exists, elaborate bidding or claiming probably adds ceremony without choice.

Did you understand why you acted when you did, and was changing that position ever worth something?
These forms reduce waiting, but they ask for different kinds of attention.
In real-time play, people act continuously under actual clock time. Punctuated real-time alternates that continuous activity with clear pauses for discussion, resolution, scoring, or reset. In simultaneous action selection, everyone privately commits to one choice before choices are revealed and resolved.

Boggle lets everyone search one grid until the timer ends. Space Alert separates timed planning from orderly resolution. In 7 Wonders, everyone chooses a card privately and then reveals together.
What you can do with it
Use simultaneity to keep everyone involved or to make prediction interesting. Do not let speed accidentally replace the vocabulary, interpretation, or judgment you meant to foreground.
Run the same activity once in turns and once simultaneously. Notice whether pressure creates energy, shallow choices, collisions, or welcome spontaneity.

Did acting together keep you involved, or prevent you from thinking in the way the puzzle deserved?

Action Timers and Time Tracks: Make Powerful Actions Consume More Time
Technical terms: Action timer, Time track
Both mechanisms price actions with time rather than an ordinary currency.
An action timer makes a worker, place, or ability unavailable until a real or abstract cooldown expires.
A time track moves each player's marker by the cost of an action; whoever is furthest behind acts next, so cheap actions may allow several opportunities before an expensive one comes due.

Kitchen Rush uses sand timers as workers that cannot be moved until their sand runs out.
Patchwork moves players along a shared time track according to the selected patch, and the player behind acts next.
What you can do with it
Use time costs when waiting itself creates an interesting tradeoff. Make the future opportunity legible; invisible cooldown bookkeeping rarely improves a word puzzle.
Choose two actions of unequal power and price them in waiting rather than points. Does the delay produce planning or merely inactivity?

Action Tokens and Phase Order: Make Permission Changes Unmistakable
A passed action token shows who currently has permission or responsibility to act. Afterward it moves according to a rule or choice rather than relying on seating alone.
Phase order answers a different question. In interleaved phases, everyone completes one phase before anyone begins the next. In sequential phases, one person completes every phase of a turn before the next person begins.

Magic passes priority among players before effects resolve. Scrabble is sequential: one person places, scores, and replenishes before the next acts.
Diplomacy interleaves hidden order submission and common resolution.
What you can do with it
Use a visible token when conversational flow leaves permission ambiguous. Interleave phases when people should decide from roughly the same state; use sequential turns when immediate feedback and simplicity matter more.
Take one multi-step turn and let everyone perform step one before anyone performs step two. What new interaction or confusion appears?

Lost Turns and Interrupts: Prefer a Response over Forced Inactivity
Technical terms: Lose a turn, Interrupt
These mechanisms pull participation in opposite directions.
Losing a turn removes a player's next ordinary opportunity to act.
An interrupt allows someone to act outside the normal sequence in response to a declared action or event.
Missing a turn often feels harsher than losing a resource because the player must watch without deciding. Interrupts keep people attentive and permit defense, but too many possible responses can make every action pause for permission.

An Uno Skip card removes the next player's turn. A Scrabble word challenge interrupts the ordinary transition after a play so its validity can be tested and the play potentially reversed.
What you can do with it
When designing a penalty, prefer a changed or reduced choice over no choice. When allowing responses, define a brief clear window and what happens to the original action.
Replace “lose a turn” with “take a constrained turn.” Then replace an automatic counter with a declared interrupt. Compare agency and delay.

Action Points: Give Each Turn a Budget of Possibilities
Technical terms: Action Points — ACT-01
You can give a player a limited budget to divide among actions. Action points turn one turn into an allocation puzzle: a player may combine several inexpensive actions, spend most of the budget on one powerful action, or repeat an action when repetition is allowed.
Different costs can express effort or importance, but a large menu of combinations can slow play. If one action is consistently the most efficient purchase, the apparent freedom collapses into routine.

Each turn provides four actions that may be spent moving, treating disease, sharing knowledge, building a research station, or discovering a cure. The interest lies in combining them around the current emergency.
What you can do with it
Use action points when choosing a combination is more interesting than choosing one action. Decide clearly whether unused capacity disappears, carries forward, or converts into something else.
Give a turn three points and price your available actions. List the combinations a thoughtful player would seriously consider; remove costs that create arithmetic without alternatives.

Did the budget let you compose a plan, or make you calculate many versions of essentially the same move?
These mechanisms make the available action depend on what was selected, held, used, or passed earlier.
Action drafting chooses from a shared limited display and may deny an option to others.
Action retrieval makes used actions unavailable until the player spends time or effort recovering them.
Command cards filter which units, areas, or action types can currently be activated.
A rondel arranges actions around a circle, so choosing one determines how far away the others become.
Action selection restrictions use the previous action, current state, location, cards, or rules to narrow the next choice.

Use restrictions to create a path through choices, not merely to say no. Players should understand why an option is unavailable and retain at least one meaningful alternative.
Let each action close one door and open another. Trace three turns forward and look for dead ends or one obviously superior cycle.

These mechanisms separate deciding from doing.
An action queue records one player's actions in an order that will execute later.
A shared action queue lets several players contribute to one common sequence.
Order counters assign commands to places or units, often secretly, before simultaneous reveal and later resolution.
Because the state may change before execution, an intention can become awkward, surprising, or harmful. That gap rewards foresight and prediction but needs clear rules for impossible actions.

When one player selects an action, a follow mechanism lets other players perform the same kind of action—often at reduced strength, for a cost, or without the chooser's special benefit.
Following reduces waiting and makes action selection social. The active player must consider not only personal benefit but also the opportunity being offered to everyone else.

These mechanisms give players exceptional capacities in different ways.
Variable player powers give different people distinct abilities, efficiencies, restrictions, or rule exceptions.
A once-per-game ability creates one irreplaceable opportunity whose central question is when to use it.
An advantage token visibly grants a temporary privilege and often transfers after use.

Root's factions approach one shared map through radically different rules. A one-use power creates a memorable commitment because waiting too long can waste it. Twilight Imperium's speaker token makes a transferable timing privilege visible to everyone.
What you can do with it
Use special powers to create perspective and identity, not merely unequal strength. Test combinations and contexts, and make a spent or transferred power unmistakable.

Did your special capacity suggest a distinctive approach, or simply make ordinary actions stronger?
Gating keeps an action, area, component, or rule unavailable until a condition is met. Unlocking is the moment it becomes available.
A tech track records progress along a largely linear path. A tech tree adds prerequisites and branches, allowing divergent or mutually exclusive developments. Track bonuses reward reaching or passing particular positions.
These structures can control complexity, create anticipation, or let players specialize. They become frustrating when the early activity feels intentionally incomplete or the most interesting possibility is withheld too long.

Pandemic Legacy reveals new rules and materials as campaign events occur. Civilization: A New Dawn improves familiar actions along development tracks, creating long-term direction without replacing the underlying activity.
What you can do with it
Open possibilities when the player can appreciate them, not simply as payment for persistence. A branch should express a meaningful direction; a track should make progress legible without pretending every kind of growth is linear.

Did each new possibility arrive after you were prepared for it, and did the original activity already feel whole?
These terms connect decisions to occurrences larger than a routine move.
An action-event gives one card or component two exclusive uses: a dependable general action or a distinctive event. An event changes the state outside the ordinary direct action sequence, arriving on a schedule, through chance, after a threshold, or in response to the current state. A narrative choice presents alternatives as a story situation whose consequences express values, identity, risk, or interpretation.

Twilight Struggle cards can supply general operations or trigger historically specific events. Pandemic's epidemic cards interrupt the ordinary rhythm with a changing shared problem. Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective lets choices of locations and witnesses construct the investigation's path.

Let the practical consequence support the meaning of the choice. If one alternative is always mechanically correct, the story language may merely disguise optimization. If a random event overwhelms prior decisions, players adapt to luck rather than author a response.

Worker Placement: Turn an Action into a Place Someone Can Claim

In worker placement, a player assigns a piece to an action space and receives its benefit. Placement often occupies or blocks that opportunity until workers return, so choosing an action also changes what remains available to everyone else.
The action field can develop. Adding and blocking buildings opens, improves, or closes spaces. Building rewards may benefit both the visitor and the owner. Placement order can differ from resolution order, separating the moment an opportunity is claimed from the moment it takes effect.

Agricola's family members claim scarce actions. Lords of Waterdeep lets players build new spaces that reward their owners when others visit. Caylus places workers first and resolves buildings later along a road.
What you can do with it
Use placement when selecting an action should leave a visible claim in a shared space. Decide whether exclusion, delayed resolution, or offering useful opportunities to others creates the interaction you want.

Worker Capacity and Types: Change What Each Worker Can Do
Technical terms: Workers of differing types, Acquiring and losing workers, Workers as dice, Single-worker placement
Worker-placement systems can vary both the pieces and the number of opportunities they represent.
Workers of differing types have distinct strength, profession, color, rank, restrictions, or powers. Acquiring and losing workers changes how many major actions a player can take. Workers as dice add a rolled value that affects placement or strength. A single-worker system makes one piece's current location and movement especially important.

Raiders of the North Sea uses worker colors to open different spaces. Agricola lets a family grow, increasing future actions while increasing support costs. Marco Polo assigns rolled dice to actions. The Gallerist centers each player on one principal moving figure.
What you can do with it
Change worker identity when “which representative?” should be a separate choice from “which action?” Change worker quantity only when additional capacity has an understandable cost and lagging players retain a way to participate meaningfully.
