Meaningful Choices and Tradeoffs: Make Every Decision Give Something Up
Technical terms: Meaningful choice, Tradeoff, Opportunity cost
A meaningful choice changes a result or experience the player cares about. A tradeoff offers incompatible benefits or costs. Opportunity cost is the value of the best alternative given up by choosing one option.
A choice can be expressive rather than competitive: selecting one word may establish a voice, crowd a region, close a crossing, or exclude another equally attractive phrase.
What you can do with it
Ask what becomes different and what is sacrificed. More buttons do not create more agency when one option is obviously best or all options lead to the same lived result.
Ask a player
Which alternative did you genuinely regret giving up?
