You can give a puzzle meaning without telling a fixed story. A metaphor can orient the rules; a role can let the player imagine doing something; a sequence of authored events can create narrative; and an open system can produce stories nobody planned.
Puzzle makers face a special opportunity: one carefully authored puzzle may be consumed only once, but that very finality allows secrets, reveals, and deliberate communication between setter and solver.

Conceit, Theme, and Simulation: Explain the Activity, Not Merely Decorate It
A game's conceit, motif, or theme is the extended metaphor through which the activity presents itself. A simulation goes further: its rules attempt to model relationships in the represented subject rather than simply dress an abstract system.
See it in Codenames and Scrabble
Codenames' spy conceit compactly explains teams, clues, hidden identities, and the assassin. Scrabble uses language as material but is largely abstract; its rules do not attempt to simulate writing or conversation.
What you can do with it
Use familiar ideas to make rules and goals intuitive. Model a subject only where fidelity creates interesting choices; “that is realistic” does not automatically justify awkward play.

Licensed Worlds and the Batman Problem: Keep Players from Feeling Like Sidekicks
Technical terms: Licensed intellectual property, Batman problem
A licensed game uses a protected world, character, or identity with permission from its rights holder. The Batman problem appears when one uniquely desirable role defines that property but several participants need equally meaningful identities: if nobody is Batman, the fantasy disappoints; if everyone is Batman, the fiction breaks.
What you can do with it
Ask what the property genuinely contributes beyond recognition. Give each participant an appealing form of agency rather than assuming proximity to the famous character is enough.

Fiction, Fantasy, Story, and Agency: Separate the World, Role, Story, and Player's Power
Technical terms: Story, Narrative, Game fiction, Fantasy, Agency
Game fiction is the represented world and its implied truths. Fantasy is what the player imagines being or doing there. Story or narrative arranges particular characters and events into a sequence. Agency is the player's meaningful power to affect what happens.
These layers can exist separately. Chess implies conflict without a fixed plot. An ocean-of-language fiction can offer the fantasy of exploration without dictating a story. Tighter authored story usually reduces possible outcomes; greater agency increases what the author must accommodate.

Name which layer you actually need. Do not add a plot when a compelling role and responsive world already motivate play.

Exhaustible content loses much of its value after its secret, story, layout, or solution is known. Intrinsic variability generates renewed situations through opponents, combinatorial interaction, random or procedural setup, or other parts of the system rather than requiring a new authored instance.
Interactive Narrative and Pacing: Give Choices Consequences Without Endless Branches
Technical terms: Linear narrative, Branching narrative, Branch and merge, Stateful branching, Hub and spokes, Pacing, Content arc
A linear narrative follows one sequence. Branching narrative sends choices toward different content. Branch and merge permits local variation before paths reconverge. Stateful branching records choices and changes later material without permanently separate paths. Hub and spokes lets players choose episodes from a central hub.
Pacing arranges intensity, difficulty, novelty, rest, and payoff over time. A content arc is the authored sequence through which puzzles, lessons, encounters, or story beats develop.
What you can do with it
Use the least expensive structure that makes choices matter. Variation and rest make climaxes visible; constant maximum difficulty flattens the experience.

Did your choices echo later, and did the sequence give you room to recover, anticipate, and notice change?
